The kitchen and bath of this Upper East Side apartment were gutted and renovated and the windows and doors were replaced. A new central air-conditioning system and laundry center were installed.
The upper cabinets in the kitchen were removed and replaced with glass shelves to open up the space. The existing glazed tile where the upper cabinets were removed was matched with tiles found at a salvage yard in Pennsylvania. The shelf brackets were also reclaimed from an architectural salvage shop and refinished.
The contractor contributed the reclaimed Kumbuk wood countertop as well as the wainscot that was used as the cabinet fronts. The same wainscot/countertop combination was used in the bedroom to cover the air conditioning condenser. The built-in recessed window shutters in the bedroom were removed, repaired, and refinished to their original condition.
